Sleep Inn

Sleep Inn

The Sleep Inn is a 50,000 sq ft hotel with 80 rooms and surface parking, adjacent to the Laurel Race Track in Laurel, MD, with a cost of over $7,000,000.

Star owns five buildings which were built between 1940 and 1960 and is known as Valencia Motel on Route 1 in North Laurel in Howard County. While master planning this area, Star realized the hidden potential of the property but needed to demolish some of the existing structures.  To do this Star invited Howard County's Fire and Rescue Department to burn down two of the motel's five buildings as a training exercise.  As flames whipped out of the motel's windows, drivers gawked and business owners stepped out of their shops to take a closer look.  Howard County Council Chairman Guy Guzzone (D-Southeast County) watched as the roof of one building collapsed. "Finally, from the flames and the ashes comes the revitalization of Route 1," said Guzzone, who had pushed to transform the corridor since coming to office in 1998. "It's exciting. It's hopeful."

In 2007 Star completed the construction of the Sleep Inn situated along the north bound side of Route 1 and adjacent to the entrance of the Laurel Race Track.  For years, Howard County had been studying ways to revive this corridor of Route 1 and the completion of the Sleep Inn was a step in the right direction.  Future development of the Valencia Motel could include demolishing other existing buildings and creating a new hotel, restaurant and office plaza.

The Sleep Inn was completed in April 2007 on schedule and within the projected budget.
